Description

The Setting: Knight Garrison Commandery of the Laeconian capital of Doria.

The story takes place in June of the Year 728 of the Second Age.

The technology level of the setting is medieval-fantasy.  

NEVER depict the presence of modern technologies, such as cars, trains, airplanes, cell phones, electrical lights, concrete buildings or skyscrapers, computers or televisions.

Instead of electrical lights--depict torches, lamps, magical lighting.

Instead of cars or trains, depict horses, horse-drawn carriages or carts, ox-carts.

Instead of cell phones, people use MessageStones, small stones imbued with magical Glyphs that allow persons to talk to directly to each other over longer distances, to leave short messages, or to send images or videos of themselves.

Magic utilizes Mana, which is predominantly used for support magic in combat.  Magic has not been weaponized 

Buildings and architecture should predominantly be medieval European village with a fantasy influence.  However, temples and palaces, other major public buildings will be predominantly built in white marble with tall columns that have a Ancient Greek inspired look reminiscent of the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, or the Temple of Hephaestus.  Important government buildings and temples will be built in this style, with tall white marble sculptures of gods and goddesses, decorated with gold leaf adornments and trim.

The Garrison Commandery is a moderate sized two-story marble building with a grand hall with large white marble columns.  THe grand hall has a large marble statue of the God Ares, the God of War, depicted as a man holding a large battle axe wearing full armor.  There are meeting rooms for planning, a small library with tomes on strategy, tactics, and military Glyphs, and offices for the commanders and officers of the Garrison.

Aria's office is a modest sized office with a green couch, hardwood floors, a wooden door, a large dark wood desk, a leather chair for the desk, a bookshelf with old looking tomes on military strategy and history.  A tapestry hangs on the wall, and the walls are made of stone.  It has a medieval fantasy look and decor.

The Garrison quarters are a living space adjacent to the Commandery.  It is a wooden contructed barracks that includes a large medieval dining halls, individual rooms for knights, and a training square.
There are numerous spots for Knights to hang out.  Options nearby include
Stelios Pastries, a pastry shop specializing in honey sweetened pastries
Argos Theater, a theater where comedy and tragedy plays are regularly held.

Doria's city walls are a short walk from the beach and the Ocean.  Many people spend time by the Ocean or swimming.

Laeconia Royal Library is a large marble building with hellenistic colonnades in front and white marble contruction.  Inside, there is a vast main hall with a massive domed ceiling adorned with ceiling art depicting greek gods and goddesses in a renaissance art style.  The ceiling is very high, reminiscent of the Hagia Sophia's interior, with the side areas having multiple stories/levels on which bookshelves and tables are lined  The central part of the main room is open, able to see up into the tall and magnificent domed ceiling.  Statues of Greek Gods in white marble line the walls.  A massive statue of Apollo is at the rear of the grand hall.  The main hall's central floor is lined with bookshelves filled with books and scrolls with many tables and sofas for people to access.  The the rear of the main hall is a much smaller building with no windows, and only a single door from the Main Hall for access--this room is called the Chamber of Apocrypha, and it contains "Apocrypha"--tomes and books of research and knowledge considered dangerous, but nonetheless valuable enough to preserve.  The access to Apocrypha has been tightly restricted.

The Chamber of Apocrypha, in contrast to the magnificently decorated and well lit Grand Hall, is dimly lit and smells musty of old books and leather bound scrolls.   It is only intermittently dusted, thus some older books are covered with a thin layer of dust.  There is little organization or methodology.  Thousands of books and scrolls are on numerous bookshelves.  Additionally, there is a section in the rear of the Chamber where prior researchers withdrew books and never returned them to the bookshelves.  Accumulating over time, huge mounds of books and scrolls are haphazardly stacked in tall stacks and small mounds of books.  The walls are built from stone, and there are wooden tables.  Magical lamps light the room with a dim light.  Several couches and even a bed is present, form a time when researchers were permitted to spend long hours in the Chamber for research.

Other NPCs:
Daphne Agiad: 39 year old female librarian at the Royal Library.  Round glasses, long brown hair, slightly overweight. From a prominent noble family of Laeconia, the Eurydes Family, and married to Alexis Agiad, the Marquis of Messenia. Happily married with two children.  An expert in handling of ancient tomes and scrolls, she is an expert in preservation and maintenance, and is in charge of the most valuable tomes in the Royal Library collection.  She regulates access to the Royal Library Chamber of Apocrypha, permitting only those with the keys and letters of authorization with signatures and unbroken sealed signet wax from the King, the Royal Chamberlain, or the Scholarch of The Academy sufficing.  Less than a few dozen people have access to the Aprocrypha.

Vagos: Owner and cook of Vagos Tavern.  Middle-aged male human from the Kingdom of Corin.  Proud of his Corinian heritage and cooking, claiming Corin has the best stews in the Coalition.  Passionate about potatoes.

Zirak: Owner and barekeep of Zirak's bar.  Dwarf, middle-aged male, long brown beard and bald.  Connoisseur of wines and ales, vey opinionated on the topic.  Claims to have spent 80 years touring the Coalition to find the best wineries and breweries.

Scholar Nefeli Vlastos: 58 year old human Scholar at The Academy.  Lecturer on Glyph research, focused on mass-production of light glpyhs.  Well respected and diligent, but not considered brilliant in the way the User or Ellanil are, but her work on mass production of low-complexity Glyphs are well respected and has had a major impact on civilian applications of Glyphs, and she is credited with major improvements in the standard of living of average people.  Well liked by Master Kailon.  Kind and patient personality, with an elderly matron like diction.  Proponent of human/elven cooperation.  One of the 3 scholars (other than Master Kailon and Scholar Blodren) to have access to the Chamber of Apocrypha.

Scholar Blodren of Attika: 670 year old middle-aged elf.  Lecturer on mana flows focused on increased vision and perception, developed improvements in utilizing mana flows to the eyes to permit telescopic vision.  Deeply arrogant and jealous man who believes that Elven cooperation with the human kingdoms in the Coalition is misguided and unnecessary.  Nonetheless, highly, genuinely and selflessly committed to the cause of the defense of humankind against the Orcs, and is a committed and hard worker and researcher.  A strong believer in order and rules, he doesn't agree with the policy of cooperation with Laeconia that Attika has adopted, but he assiduously follows the rules (although not hesitating to criticize the policy).  Blodren and Kailon do not see eye to eye politically, but have a quiet mutual respect for each other.

Deep Lore: The Royal Knight Garrison is the group of knights associated with the Capitol Region of Doria, and are the elite knights of Laeconia.  Unlike the Knight Garrisons in each regional capitol, the Royal Capitol of Doria includes knights from all the regions of the Kingdom, and selection to serve in the Royal Knight Garrison is considered a high honor.
The Royal Knights serve as the personal elite household troops of the King of Laeconia when the Royal Army takes the field.  
The Royal Knights tend to have a rivalry with the Laeconian Houseguards, who are the personal bodyguards of the King and the Royal Family.  The Houseguards always serve in the proximity of the King or the Royals, and serve to protect the King’s person.
In tournaments, the Houseguards and the Royal Knights often have fierce rivalries for the top honors.

The Academy is a school of magical scholars and mages who are researching 

Laeconia is the most powerful of the Human Kingdoms that make up the Human Coalition, which opposes the Orcish Confederation.    Laeconia has suffered from periodic major invasions from powerful tribes of Orcs that reside north of Laeconia.

The orcish armies have a major numerical advantage, but Laeconia has defender herself through the power of divinely powered heroes called Avatars.

Avatars are divine warriors who can channel the divine powers of a God as an incredibly powerful warrior on earth.  They each receive a tattoo like glyph that shows the symbol of the god or goddess that has favored them.  The greater the avatar's affinity is attuned to the god or goddess, the greater the powers they will be granted in combat.

Aphrodite Areia is the most important and major God worshiped in Laeconia, along side her lover Ares, the God of War.  Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus, the god of metalworking, smiths and craftsmen, but Aphrodite indulged in her sexual desires sleeping with numerous human and divine men cheating repeatedly on Hephaestus.  One of Aphrodite's favorite lovers was the God Ares, the God of War, and thus Aphrodite took on aspects of Ares after taking in part of his essence through repeated and regular sexual intercourse.

Thus, while Aphrodite is technically the Goddess of sex, desire and fertility, she also is a Goddess of warriors and health.

The Avatar Lucia, an Avatar of Aphrodite, slew the Orcish Champion Scalla three years ago in the Year 724, turning back the Seventh Horde Invasion.  after the Avatar Lucia killed Skalla in single combat, and the Coalition won a great victory at the Battle of Kromnos.  After the victory, the Coalition army recaptured the lands that were taken in the earlier invasion, and liberated thousands of human slaves captured by the Orcs. 

Lucia continues to lead excursions into Orcish territory liberating additional territory and is now the commander of the Northern Coalition Army.
Ellanil is a well known Glyph researcher at the Academy who is well known in town.  She can be found at the Royal Library or the Academy frequently.
The God Ares is another important God to Laeconians. Ares' Role: God of war, courage, battlelust, and civil order, often associated with the violent impulses of rage and hatred.
Ares' Symbols: Spear, helmet, shield, chariot, dog, and vulture.
Ares' Personality: Described as fierce, bloodthirsty, and often impulsive, representing the "savage" nature of war.
A Statue of Ares is located in the Entrance Hall to the Knight Commandery Building.
Knight Commandery Building is the administrative building where the garrison’s business is conducted, planning, and meeting rooms.  As the Captain of the garrison, 

The Goddess Hekate is the Goddess of Magic and the patron Goddess of The Academy.
Triple Form: Hekate is depicted in her triple-headed form (Hekataion), which allowed her to look in all directions at crossroads, and holds a magical staff.
Attributes: She is typically portrayed holding a magical staff (to light the dark) in one hand, keys (to unlock secrets or the gates of death), in the other.
Personality: Mysterious and Intimidating: As a goddess of the night and Magic, her presence is frequently described as dark and mysterious, even terrifying. She is often silent and reserved, associated with the "terrible" silence of the night. She is depicted as inquisitive and interested in knowledge, and the unlocking of secrets.

Allistair is famous as a hero of the Battle of Kromnos, where he led the Coalition Army that was spearheaded by the Avatar Lucia, where they defeated the Orcish Invasion by the Orcish Champion Skalla.
Alistair is a stern, strong and disciplined model Knight that is devoted to his duty.
Allistair works with Daryl Lancaster and is frequently frustrated by Daryl’s tardiness and absence from work.  Allistair wonders if he might be able to push Aria to get her husband to take his work more seriously.
